DIGICEL OPEN CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENT

Digicel Open Classic Golf Tournament starts this Saturday

Digicel's CEO Gregory Dean tees off to get the tournament underway last year.
Public Relations and Events Manager Shonnet Moore hands over the sponsorship cheque to Club Treasurer Brian Hackett in the presence of Patrick Prashad yesterday.
Clearly satisfied with what they saw last year, Digicel came forward once again to sponsor its Open Golf Tournament which will be staged on Saturday and Sunday, at the Lusignan Course on the East Coast of Demerara.
The launching of the Tournament took place yesterday morning at the Company’s Head Office in Kingston where Public Relations and Events Manager Shonnet Moore made the presentation of a cheque worth $1.4 million to Club Treasurer Brian Hackett in the presence of Captain Patrick Prashad and Business Development Manager Gavin Hope.
Speaking at the occasion, Moore took the opportunity to once again emphasise the entity’s commitment to the development of sports in Guyana, adding that they believe that if athletes are given the chance to develop their skills then it creates other options for them.
Prashad speaking on behalf of the club first thanked Digicel for its continued support, before giving an overview of the tournament.
He said that the tournament presented the players with adequate competition shortly before the start of local golf’s flagship event which is the Guyana Open scheduled to be played the following weekend.
The format will be the Medal play where all the players will be handicapped, while each day will see a winner being declared.
The winner will be the player with the best net score, while prizes will also be awarded for the longest drive of the day, nearest to the pin and the longest shot of the fairway.
Prashad also informed that a number of overseas based players from Canada and the USA are already in the country to participate in the tournament.
He stressed the relevance of the tournament which apart from offering good practice for the Guyana Open to the players also presents an opportunity for residents of the community to showcase their abilities and hospitality.
The defending champion is Vijay Deo, while Christine Sukhram was the best female golfer on show.
