Dancehall artiste accused of electricity theft

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Friday June 10, 2011 – Popular dancehall artiste O’neil ‘Elephant Man’ Bryan has been charged in connection with an illegal electricity hook up that robbed the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) of thousands of dollars every month.

It’s unclear how long the illegal connection was in use, however.

Bryan pleaded not guilty to the charge of abstracting electricity when he appeared in court yesterday and was ordered to be back in court again on August 30th.

The alleged crime was discovered last Thursday, according to police, when a team from the power company went with lawmen to an apartment building in the capital, Kingston.

They found that the meter had an illegal connection which went to the apartment Bryan was living in.

Local media reports say that investigators determined that the appliances in his residence consumed about 2,200 kilo watt hours per month, totalling J$68,000 (US$802) per month.

Dancehall Hero and Role Model… a jus suh di ting set

“If you’re expecting me to be a role model to your children you’ve already lost as a parent.”

In winding down his presentation (that was not a lecture) at the University of the West Indies on Thursday March 7 2011 Adidjah Palmer more popularly known as Vybz Kartel uttered the above quote. It was met with thunderous applause by the many who gathered to witness the human colouring book. It was praise well deserved; ‘di teacha’ should be lauded for mastering the art of deflection. At first glance it’s easy for one to “take it to the parents” and verbally scold them for failing at their job. Upon further evaluation a reasonable retort would be- is it unfair of a parent to expect Vybz Kartel to be a role model to their child? Yes. No. Well. Hmm? That’s an interesting question.

Kartel turns himself in, Mavado still wanted

POPULAR dancehall deejay Vybz Kartel, is now being questioned by detectives at the Constant Spring Police Station.
Kartel turned himself in to the cops in the presence of his attorney Valerie Nieta-Robertson, a short while ago.
He and his dancehall rival Mavado were last night named as persons of interest by the police who want to interrogate both men in relation to a series of crimes committed in the division recently.
Kartel, whose real name is Adijah Palmer and Mavado, who real name is David Brooks, both wield considerable influence in the neighbouring communities of 'Big Yard' and Cassava Piece which are situated on Mannings Hill Road in St Andrew.
Gangs from both communities were at loggerheads for months during which several murders and shootings were committed. However a truce between both artistes led to a lull in the violence earlier this year.

Sampaloo - Reggae Musics Newest Immigrant.

By Lisa Connors

Sampaloo (meaning discipline, honesty and loyalty) is originally from Kingston, Jamaica. A former professional athlete, he always thought that running would be his life long career but had a change in plans after getting involved in a farm aid program which brought him to Canada. His direction in life took a different turn upon his arrival when he developed a passionate interest in music. Taking cues from conscious artistes like Josey Whales and Charlie Chaplin and dancehall stars like Beenie Man and Bounty Killer, Sampaloo forged his own style and began his music career. Sampaloo describes his music as "hardcore dancehall reggae" and addresses issues such as black on black crime and violence as well as family values and encouraging the youths to stay in school. He has opened for such prominent Reggae artistes as Sean Paul, Anthony B and Glen Washington. Sampaloo cites his family as his main source of pride and encouragement and has gotten his children strongly involved in his career. They have showcased their talents at many stage shows around Montreal such as Barbados Day, and Black History Month Celebrations, as well as travelled to Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton and Quebec to perform. Sampaloo made his radio debut in 1995 with a tribute to the Late Great Garnett Silk. This prompted invitations to appear at many other events such as Jamaica Day and Prymtym's Birthday Bash where he performed to an audience in excess of 2,000, being so well received that he earned the title of Montreal's DJ of the Year in 1995! He appeared on Montreal's International Reggae Festival in 2004 and was also nominated for a Canadian Reggae Music Award that same year for his song "Immigration" which addresses the struggles he has encountered in Canada. His latest EP "Landed" is an answer to his struggles being overcome! Look out for much more from this up and coming artiste! Sampaloo's music video "Immigration (Landed)" WATCH IT NOW!!!!!
