Jamaica now has the Guinness World Record for the most books donated to charity in a seven-day period.
The record of 657,061 books, which were collected during the Rotary Club of Jamaica 'Race to Literacy' book drive - held from May 1-8 this year - was confirmed by officials at the New York office of the Guinness Book of World Records.
This shatters the old mark of 241,624 books, which were collected by Rotary International in Los Angeles, California, two years ago.
The chairman of the 'Race to Literacy' book drive, Deika Morrison, said the record was smashed after the first nine hours.
"Jamaica has set a lot of records in sports and other areas. It is great that we can now set a record for charity," Morrison told The Gleaneryesterday.
She was also full of praise for the many public- and private-sector companies and the thousands of individuals who worked together on the project.
Morrison said all the books have since been distributed, with the Jamaica Library Service being the primary recipient.
She said those given to the Jamaica Library Service were distributed in schools and throughout its branches.
Some of the books were also distributed to Food For The Poor for distribution to schools and churches.
Morrison said some of the books were purchased by telecommunications firm Digicel, to be sent to Haiti.
