Italian airline fills void in Antigua

ST JOHN’S, Antigua,  – Italian airline Blue Panorama has started flights to Antigua and Barbuda to fill a void left by another operator that went into liquidation earlier this year.
Blue Panorama is providing weekly charter flights from Milan to the V.C. Bird International Airport so the island won’t lose out on what tourism authorities say is a steadily growing Italian visitor market.
The route was formerly serviced by Livingston Airlines which went into liquidation in September of this year. At that time it was doubtful whether another airline would be able to meet all of the necessary requirements to begin operating in time for the winter season 2011.
But after successful negotiations involving the Ministry of Tourism, the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA), and representatives of Press Tours, an Italian tour operator, and Blue Panorama Airlines, a solution was found.

ABTA Chief Executive Officer Colin C. James said the service would be valuable in maintaining and increasing visitor numbers out of Italy.
“The Italian market has always been a very buoyant market for Antigua and Barbuda, bringing in over 7,000 visitor arrivals last year,” a statement from the Ministry of Tourism said, noting that between now and January 3rd, Blue Panorama will bring 207 Italian visitors to Antigua and Barbuda, with strong forward bookings for the rest of the season.
The charter flights will continue its visits to Antigua and Barbuda until May 2011.
