Holder sets new record at Carifta swimming

Barbados added 14 more medals to its tally on day 2 of the CARIFTA Swimming Championships at the Aquatic Centre on Sunday night, to bring the overall medal haul to 25.

Barbados now has nine gold, nine silver and seven bronze medals and sits atop the medal standings as a result of a superior gold medal tally. Trinidad is second with 28 medals (eight gold, 11 silver, nine bronze) and Bahamas is third with 20 medals (seven gold, five silver and eight bronze).

Zabrina Holder continued her ripping form on Sunday night with two gold medals, one of which came about in record time. Holder stopped the clock at 29.64 seconds in the Girls 13-14 50m Fly, breaking the old record of 29.74 seconds set in 2008 by Kendese Nangle. Taryn Smith of the Bahamas was third in 29.92 and Trinidad’s Kristin Julien was third in 30.11.

Holder’s other gold medal came in the 200m Freestyle which she won in 2:10.06. Holder was one of the last swimmers off the board into the water, but when she surfaced she was half a body length ahead of the pack. At the last turn for home, Aruba’s Danielle van den Berg made a late bid to overtake Holder, but it was all in vain. van den Berg was second in 2:11.50m while Barbados’ Amara Gibbs was third in 2:14.22.

Holder spoke to the Barbados Advocate after her races and noted that she was pleased with her performances. She admitted that she knew she would have broken the record and is hoping for even better performances in her other races.

The Girls 13-14 400m Medley Relay team destroyed the competition to set a new record of 4:40.03. The old record of 4:42.95 was set in 2009 by Jamaica. A distant second was the Bahamas in 4:45.28, while Jamaica was third in 4:47.08.

The first gold medal of the day for Barbados came in the 11-12 Girls 200m Free, which was easily won by Sariyah Sherry. Sherry led from start to finish and won in 2:17.83. Guadeloupe took the silver and bronze with Charlotte Backovic in 2:19.01 and Florence Genipa in 2:19.70. Sherry also won a bronze in the 11-12 Girls in 1:17.00.
