Rogue cops escaping sanctions

The Police Civilian Oversight Authority has found that many misbehaving cops are not facing strong disciplinary action.

The observation has been made in the Authority’s 2009/ 2010 annual report.

According to the Authority, disciplinary action was mostly taken in cases of minor offences, and there was little or punitive sanctions for serious infractions.

Aspects of the report were outlined by Daryl Vaz, the minister with responsibility for information, at yesterday’s post Cabinet press briefing.

Vaz informed the Inspection and Monitoring Unit of the Police Civilian Oversight Authority to conduct comprehensive inspections of 45 police stations and posts in six divisions last year.

He said the Legal Medicine Unit was also assessed.

Vaz said the Police Civilian Oversight Authority noted that police personnel are not aware of the divisional crime plans being implemented.
