'Winter tourist season a success'

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) revealed today, despite the deep recession in some major markets, many hotels enjoyed high occupancy levels.

Now that the winter tourist season is over, Wayne Cummings, JHTA president, said, during a press conference at St. Andrew’s Spanish Court Hotel yesterday, that the season successful.

The 2010/2011 winter tourist season started on December 15 and ended on March 15.

"Were we full? Absolutely not,” he said. “Many of our hotels did record very, very high occupancy.

“But quite a number of them did not have the same story," Cummings said.

The JHTA president noted the successes in the local tourism industry this season resulted from a number of elements working in Jamaica's favour, such as the "strong" hospitality brands based here, and "one of the coldest winters in North America in recent history."

"Coming off of three years of tough, tough economical challenges, we are very grateful," he added during the press conference that was also used to announce activities planned to mark the JHTA's 50th anniversary this year.
