Air traffic controllers threaten more protest action

The Jamaica Air Traffic Controllers Association says it is yet to hear from the government on the issues which led members to strike over the weekend, despite air traffic controllers returning to work on Monday night.

The association is threatening that there could be further disruption at the island's international airports, if their request for Prime Minister Bruce Golding to intervene in the dispute is not met.

The air traffic controllers had taken action to protest against the delay, in settling the long-running dispute over the overpayment of salaries two years ago.

They were also disgruntled that they were left out of a series of meetings called to discuss how an outstanding seven per cent increase will be paid to public sector workers.

President of the association, Kurt Solomon, said the group had expected to meet with Golding and other government ministers yesterday, but have so far heard nothing from the government.

He said calls to Labour Minister Pearnel Charles went unanswered.

Solomon said the association agreed to be patient until Friday.

However, he said the association stands ready to act if the government fails to meet with them.
