ATLANTA (AP) - Wendy's/Arby's Group Inc. plans to develop 24 Wendy's restaurants in the next 10 years throughout the Eastern Caribbean, including Trinidad and Tobago and eight other markets.
CEO Roland Smith said restaurants in Puerto Rico and the Bahamas are strong performers, and the company is growing in Central America, so the move expands on its momentum.
The new franchisee will be led by Dane Darbasie, a restaurant industry insider who has served as leader of a restaurant management company for 12 years.
The other Eastern Caribbean markets the company plans to have Wendy's restaurants in are: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Vincent and Suriname.
On Tuesday, the company announced plans to open 180 dual-branded Wendy's and Arby's restaurants in Russia over the next 10 years.
Wendy's/Arby's Group, based in Atlanta, has struggled domestically in the weak economy as people eat out less, so expanding abroad is a way to increase sales.
Company shares fell 5 cents to $4.26 in morning trading.
