Cement import licence stays - Samuda

The Jamaican government says it will not be rescinding its May 16 decision to impose a licence on cement imports at this time.

The declaration was made by Industry, Investment and Commerce minister, Karl Samuda in an interview with the Gleaner/Power 106 news.

Samuda said despite yesterday’s announcement that a shipment of cement to the Dominican Republic was finally being offloaded, it is important that the licence requirement remain in place.

He said keeping the measure in place would ensure that there is ongoing monitoring of the movement of cement coming into the island.

The decision to impose a license was made after the government of the Dominican Republic refused to release the shipment of Jamaican cement which was prevented from being off-loaded by interests in the Dominican Republic since mid-April.

The shipment, exported by Caribbean Cement Limited is valued at US$250,000.

Samuda has described the decision by the authorities in the Dom Rep to allow offloading of the cement as a positive development.

Samuda added that the resolution of the impasse can only serve to enhance trading relations between Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.
