Grange Asks Young Musicians To Follow Knibb

The passing of Lloyd Knibb, according to Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, minister of youth, sports and culture with responsibility for entertainment, has left a void in the music industry that will not be filled easily.

While saying so, the minister urged young musicians take aim at that void.

"I am encouraging young musicians, though, especially drummers, to aspire to the standard set by Lloyd Knibb, a musician of pure class and a gentleman."

On Friday, Grange, in a press release, said she was deeply saddened by the news of the death of the Skatalite drummer, another of Jamaica's great musicians.

"Lloyd Knibb we will remember as a world-class drummer and the man who was largely responsible for the birth of the ska beat. His Skatalite bandmates would tell you that Lloyd, who was an original member of the world-famous band, was the consummate drummer who never failed at his trade, and delighted audiences with his drum solos.

"Lloyd was very much a part of the band when it reunited, and remained so until yesterday when he died at 80 years old."

Grange said Knibb was a special member of perhaps the greatest band that Jamaica has produced.

Grange also expressed sympathy to Knibb's widow, Enid, his five children, seven grandchildren and great grandchild.
