Mary Mary To Headline Gospel In Harmony

Gospel In Harmony, a gospel showcase featuring some of the very best acts in the genre, will be staged by Premier Events on Sunday at the National Arena in Kingston, Jamaica.

Popular international gospel duo, Mary Mary, will be headlining the event and they will be joined onstage by Thrillers United, Prodigal Son, One Voice and the Kencot Youth Choir.

According to a spokesperson for Premier Events, "We recognise that there is a plethora of reggae and dancehall concerts on the island and, for that reason, Premier Events has taken the bold step to inject a breath of fresh air into the mix, with a cutting-edge gospel event catering to the entire family.

"The success of gospel shows, such as the recently concluded Fun in the Son, points to a dire need for more family-oriented events such as Gospel In Harmony."

Sister act Mary Mary will undoubtedly prove a huge drawing card, as their contemporary, cross-over hits have garnered for them millions of fans worldwide, both within and outside of the gospel arena.

Ever since the siblings - Erica and Tina Campbell - broke through in 2000 with the pioneering crossover hit Shackles (Praise You), the chart-topping sister act has not wavered from defying convention to fulfil its mission: sending uplifting messages through music and words that are relatable to everyone.

Eleven years later, having earned three Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, an NAACP Image Award and a BET Award, the 'Mary Mary way' sounds just as fresh and innovative on the duo's sixth album, aptly titled Something Big.

Among Mary Mary's popular numbers are Can't Give Up Now, Yesterday and Heaven and The Real Party.

comeback for thrillers

Also eager to get the gospel party jumping will be Thriller United.

It has been a while since this group performed on the gospel stage in Jamaica, and the Shirley Willis-led praise-and-worship troubadours are in high spirits.

Willis is gearing up to give her first big performance in Jamaica since her miracle recovery from an accident which left her in a coma for weeks.

Thrillers United comprises Sandra Brooks, Leroy Smith, Shirley Willis, Karlene Bartolo and Patricia Archer.

The group, the former members of the Grace Thrillers, have not been tempted by the secular world of entertainment, and have led the gospel scene for years, both in Jamaica and the Caribbean. Today, they have regrouped with the name Thrillers United.

Joining in the harmony of the concert will be the group appropriately named One Voice.

In November 2001, Andell Haughton, while attending the then Mico Teachers' College, had an idea to start a group that would consist of males and females.

At the time, Haughton was singing with a male quintet group called Quest, but felt compelled to put together a diverse ministry. Haughton recruited a few friends and, eventually, One Voice became a reality.

Many-time award-winning performer, Prodigal Son, is no stranger to the gospel arena, and he should be on fire as he goes through his paces for his fans. Interestingly, Prodigal Son has performed alongside Mary Mary on two occasions, and he is definitely anticipating this reunion.

"And I am looking forward to enjoying the evening with the Kencot Youth Choir," Prodigal declared.

"I am not Adventist, but everyone knows that they have a special gift when it comes on to singing," he stated.
