New air services agreement could help LIAT

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, Monday June 6, 2011 – Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer has announced that a new air transport agreement between Antigua and Cuba is in the works, and could prove beneficial to regional airline, LIAT.

He said the draft bilateral aviation agreement is currently under review and may be in place within six months.

Spencer’s announcement follows a recent official visit to Cuba. His delegation included LIAT representatives.

“Very productive and fruitful discussions were held on the whole question of air transportation which should lead to an air services agreement with Cuba and LIAT,” he said.

“The whole idea is to have that in place before year end, that is the objective, and we see great potential in that area and we are working real hard on that,” he added.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of LIAT, Brian Challenger says the establishment of the formal agreement, through the possible signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and legal framework, will determine the terms of operation for the airline.

In addition to air services, the discussions between the Antiguan delegation and Cuban officials focused on the areas of tourism, health, education and training, infrastructural development, agriculture and sports.
