Plans afoot to improve the Sumfest experience

ORGANISERS of the annual music festival, Reggae Sumfest, are moving to ensure a patron-friendly experience for the 2011 edition as the venue is set to undergo extensive work to alleviate problems that were experienced in the past.

Due to heavy rains last year, the venue encountered soggy muddy conditions which proved a major problem for show goers; however the organisers have put in place stringent measures to alleviate this problem.

Summerfest Productions venue manager Sydney Reid explains: "We will be cutting a lot more drainage areas right throughout the venue this year so that there cannot be any settling of water. We will also be building roadways using special material for the roadways and pathways heading into and around the venue. It will be similar to an asphalt roadway."

Reid

added that there will be an extended roadway at the back of the field so patrons can access the vendors easily.

"We have extended the area from 30 feet to 60 feet so it's a lot wider and patrons can walk freely to vendors. That area will be completely paved as well so there will be no mud if it rains."

All the walk paths have also been redone using the 'Chip and Spray' method.

"When patrons come to the venue this year it will be like using a roadway inside the venue, all the bathroom areas, VIP and backstage area will be totally resurfaced."

Reid added that the car park will also be re-done so that patrons can access the venue easier.

"We are about eighty per cent finished with all the work we are doing; most of the drainage, lifting and re-building is fixed so I am hoping that by this weekend we will complete the massive project."

Another feature to this year's Sumfest experience is the addition of bathroom facilities to better serve the public.

"We have put in three times more portable toilets to take some of the pressure off our six major bathrooms; we have also improved the restroom area in VIP with luxury fixtures."

Not to be outdone, the vendors will also experience better amenities as the organisers have added 25 additional wash stands for the area.

This year, the Reggae Sumfest venue will take on a red, green and gold reggae theme with the entrance, signs, and doorways all decked in the colours. In addition, with all the improvements to the venue and upgraded amenities, this will enhance the Reggae Sumfest Experience for 2011.

Reggae Sumfest 2011 will take place from Sunday July 17 to Saturday July 23 in Catherine Hall, Montego Bay.
