CODRINGTON, Barbuda, Tuesday April 26, 2011 – Officials in Antigua’s sister isle are going ahead with plans to rename a beach after the late Princess Diana, choosing her 50th birthday as the date for the official name change.
The Barbuda Council has indicated that on July 1, it will name the shores alongside the former K-Club Hotel the Princess Diana Beach to honour her legacy and her spirit of humility and sophistication.
“Barbuda became a sanctuary for the Princess and she seemed to find solace in the beauty of the island and the hospitality of the people. The Barbuda Council hopes that the Princess Diana Beach will serve as a reminder of the hope and courage which is a significant part of Diana’s legacy,” a government statement said.
A charity and commemorative stamp are also being considered to honor the humanitarian spirit that defines the life work of Princess Diana, it added.
The former K-Club Hotel was a favourite holiday escape of the late Princess and her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
Their last family vacation on the 62 square-mile isle, which has a population of about 1,500, was in April 1997.There has been speculation that Prince William, who will marry Kate Middleton on Friday, was considering honeymooning in Barbuda. The British media had reported that the Middleton family has been in “discreet talks” with the Lighthouse Bay Resort, which is located on a private peninsular with acres of deserted beach and accessible only via helicopter or boat.
It has been rumoured that the soon to be wed Prince plans to spend Mother’s Day in Barbuda on the return leg of his honeymoon.
However, no details of the honeymoon have been officially released.
