Haitian President-elect gets US support

CMC – The United States gave unreserved support to the President-elect of Haiti, Michel Martelly, during a brief visit to Washington on Wednesday.

Martelly indicated that his new vision for the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country would be to implement “useful and necessary reforms”.

The Haitian president-elect was congratulated by US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton for his landslide victory in the March 20 presidential elections in Haiti.

"I'm very encouraged by the campaign that Martelly ran, his emphasis on the people and their needs, his willingness to be very clear on what he hoped to achieve on their behalf," Clinton said.

Martelly, who takes over from President Rene Preval on May 14, said he would dedicate his first six months in office to tackling the cholera epidemic which has been sweeping the country, getting those still living in tent cities into permanent accommodation and boosting agricultural production.

More than 600,000 people still live in camps after last year's devastating earthquake that killed an estimated 300,000 people and left more than a million others homeless.

During his brief visit to the United States, Martelly held talks with officials from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to a World Bank official, President Robert Zoellick and Martelly discussed food prices, policies that can spur job creation, education leading to employment, and the improvement of the business environment in Haiti.

While the final results of the presidential and legislative council elections have not yet been made public, political observers in Haiti said that Preval's ruling INITE party is expected to keep its parliamentary majority.
